Patrice Motsepe, President of the Confederation of African Football, CAF, has pledged top-tier organization and security for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, in Cote d’Ivoire.
Motsepe provided the guarantee at a news conference on Friday in Abidjan, ahead of the biennial continental showpiece’s start on Saturday.
He stated that CAF has been working with the host countries around the clock to provide a fitting event and avoid the mistakes of the previous tournament in Cameroon.
“I am pleased that there is a great deal of determination and commitment, and I believe we are on the right track.”
“The accident in Cameroon was completely avoidable.”
“I am satisfied the appropriate steps have been taken to make sure we will totally avoid the painful experience we had in Cameroon,” he went on to say.
According to the DAILY POST, the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon was marred by a stampede at the Olembe Stadium in Yaounde that killed eight spectators and injured others during the round of 16 match between Cameroon and the Comoros.
The CAF president stated that efforts were being made to ensure a smooth competition.
