Coach Jose Peseiro has changed the composition of the Super Eagles ahead of their opening group game of the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, against Equatorial Guinea.
According to the DAILY POST, alterations to the roster are necessary due to injuries to certain key players and the absence of Kelechi Iheanacho.
Sadiq Umar, Victor Boniface, and Kelechi Iheanacho are all sidelined, leaving the Super Eagles with only one fit striker, Victor Osimhen.
Due to injury, Umar and Boniface were replaced by Paul Onuachu and Terem Moffi.
The late call-ups, on the other hand, are unlikely to arrive in time for the first game.
Also, Iheanacho, who is recovering from a knock, is expected to fly in from the United Kingdom today (Saturday;) a day before the game, virtually ruling him out.
As the team’s lone healthy striker, Osimhen was kept away from all physical contact during the team’s Friday training session, which was watched by NAN.
He was also told not to engage in any tackles or aggressive contact during the team’s last training sessions before the game.
Ahmed Musa, the team captain, was assigned as a reserve striker.
Initially selected to play as a winger, Musa is now slated to start as the backup striker in the absence of Moffi, Iheanacho, and Onuachu.
The three-time African champions will begin their quest for a fourth crown against Equatorial Guinea on Sunday, followed by Ivory Coast on January 18.
On January 22, they will play Guinea-Bissau in their final group game.
