The Super Bowl is barely here, but the media has already released its new NFL power rankings, even before teams have had a chance to adjust their rosters for free agency and the draft. 4,444 4,444 ESPN is one such outlet with very early power rankings, and the Giants are ranked No. 27 ahead of Tennessee, Arizona, New England, Washington and Carolina.proclaims itself as “the main sport of the world andquot; of rankings:The Giants are at a crossroads with soon-to-be free agent quarterback Saquon Barkley.
It’s now or never a long-term commitment. New York also has to decide whether to build a team around quarterback Daniel Jones, who has the No. 6 overall pick and plenty of draft capital, in one year. Creating a quarterback is Jonesand#039; injury history now, including two neck injuries and a torn ACL.ESPN used three words to describe the Giants’ upcoming offseason: “Some big decisions.”Big decisions, starting with the quarterback position.
General manager Joe Schoen said Daniel Jones is expected to be the starter once he finishes his rehab from a torn ACL. But the Giants can’t ignore the fact that Jones already has two neck injuries in the past three years and has missed four of five seasons.Schoen did not rule out selecting a quarterback later this spring, saying they have to do something to address a situation where only Jones and Tomy DeVito are under contract.
Another big decision going forward is the status of quarterback Saquon Barkley, who is expected to become an unrestricted free agent. Both sides want to make it work, but the Giants don’t want to pay Barkley what they think he’s worth.
The franchise tag is around $12 million, which is another cost the Giants can be picky about while keeping their cap.Considering everything that happened last season and how the Giants are still not competitive against good teams, this is a fair ranking.
Injuries, inconsistent quarterbacking and a host of other factors may have contributed to last season’s downfall, but the Giants must return in 2024 with another winning product. They can’t fall back into the hole of losing seasons after crawling out of there in 2022.
The Giants, who have seven picks in this year’s draft, currently have about $26 million in free agency money. Schoen is likely looking to add more cap space to his total, but it remains to be seen if he can add to the starting cap since the Giants are not projected to have players this year..
