On Jones’ deal, however, the Chiefs have chosen to exercise the option, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media. The organization fulfilled their obligation to pay him the $4.25 million he had earned in incentives, but the procedural action keeps them in the running to be able to franchise tag him.
In March, All-Pro defensive tackle Jones will become a free agency if the Chiefs are unable to secure a long-term contract with him or if they choose not to put the tag on him.
For a one-year contract, the Chiefs would have to pay $32.16 million for the tag.
