Despite playing alongside an explosive rookie, Detroit Lions RB David Montgomery was one of the best values at running back last season. With the Lions running it back with Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs, should fantasy football managers go back to the well with Montgomery in 2024 Best Ball drafts?
David Montgomery’s 2024 Fantasy Outlook
Looking back on the 2023 season, there were a lot of unexciting veteran players that were undervalued. Chief among them was Montgomery.
Regardless of the fantasy format, managers love a shiny new toy. Naturally, Gibbs was going to be drafted ahead of Montgomery.
Of course, this turned out to be a good take by the fantasy community. Gibbs averaged 16.1 fantasy points per game and finished as the overall RB8. But Montgomery was no slouch.
From a talent standpoint, Montgomery and Gibbs aren’t even in the same conversation. But that’s more of a statement as to how gifted Gibbs is rather than an indictment on Montgomery. The latter is far from a bad player.
Early in Montgomery’s career, I was very critical of the Chicago Bears running back. For the first 25 games or so, Montgomery was one of the worst starting running backs in the league. But he’s now had more games as a good running back than a bad one.
