STILLWATER, Okla. – The doubles pair of Sofia Cabezas and Elza Tomase from the Tennessee women’s tennis team collected a second-round win, propelling themselves into the NCAA Doubles Quarterfinals on Wednesday night at Greenwood Tennis Center. Cabezas and Tomase defeated No. 12 Amelia Rajecki and Maddy Zamprado of NC State, 1-6, 6-1, 11-9.
Cabezas and Tomase become the 12th Lady Vol duo to earn All-American status, including the second tandem under head coach Alison Ojeda. Together this season they have notched 14 wins, with six over ranked pairs.
After dropping the first set, 1-6, the Lady Vols rebounded in 6-1 fashion. During the second set, the pair won a total of 71 percent of all match points, tallying 24 of the 34. Cabezas and Tomase also secured an impressive first-serve clip of 88 percent, missing only two.
With the match square at one, the decision came down to a 10-point tiebreaker. Ten though was not enough, as NC State staved off a match point with Tomase serving at 9-8. Tennessee then took each of the next two points to seal the victory.
Cabezas and Tomase are the fifth duo in program history to advance to the quarterfinal round of the NCAA Doubles Championship. The last Tennessee pair to do so was No. 4 Brynn Boren and Kata Szekely in 2013 after reaching the Quarterfinals by defeating Pepperdine’s Lorraine Guillmero and Khunpak Issara, 6-2, 3-6, 7-5.

Cabezas and Tomase will square off tomorrow against No. 7 Mia Kupres and Mary Stonia (Texas A&M) or No. 28 Ayana Akli and Sara Hamner (South Carolina). The time of the match is to be determined.
