As the Kentucky Wildcats look to make one more addition to the backcourt, they’ve reached out to a familiar name.
According to On3’s Jamie Shaw, Kentucky has contacted former North Carolina Tar Heels guard Cade Tyson. BYU, Ohio State, Purdue, Clemson, and Iowa are among the others that have made contact.
You may remember Tyson from the 2024 transfer portal cycle when Kentucky recruited him following a successful two-year stint at Belmont. The North Carolina native was originally an unranked class of 2022 recruit who quickly became one of the best mid-major players.
The 6-foot-7, 200-pound Tyson was the 2022-23 Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Year after averaging 13.6 points (49% shooting and 41.7% on 3s) and 4.6 rebounds per game.
As a sophomore in the 2023-24 season, Tyson averaged 16.2 points on 49.3% shooting (46.5% from deep on 5.5 attempts per game), 5.9 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game.
However, things went horribly wrong with the Tar Heels. He wound up playing just 7.9 minutes per game while averaging 2.6 points (40% shooting and 29.2% on 3s) and 1.1 rebounds per game.
Despite the struggles in Chapel Hill, Tyson has the potential to be a nice Ansley Almonor-type player for Kentucky if he’s willing to take on that type of role. But the Wildcats will need to miss on several other names before that kind of scenario even becomes a possibility.
